We Love Junk Journals!
Learn how to make your own!

Why we love Junk Journaling :
- Time Traveling: Your Junk Journal is like a time capsule. In the future, you can look back at it to remember places you went, people you spent time with, and the things you were interested in at this moment in your life.
- Upcycling: It’s like scrapbooking but with an environmental twist! Save the planet by creating collages out of “single-use” materials like food wrappers and clothing tags. Or find a new life for old papers, photos, drawings, or other materials that would otherwise end up forgotten or thrown away.
- Wellness: Your Junk Journal is your place to express yourself creatively. There are no rules to follow, no grades, and no competition. It’s up to you if you want to work on your journal with friends as a social activity or work on your own as a calming activity or a way to process your feelings. And projects like Junk Journaling are a great alternative to screen-time!
What is “upcycling”? :
Upcycling is all about creating something amazing out of something that has lost its original charm. Instead of throwing things away or letting them sit in a drawer, you can transform your “junk” into something fresh with a brand new purpose. If you’ve ever reused egg cartons as seed planters or sewn a new outfit out of old fabric, then you are already an upcycling expert!
How do I make my own Junk Journal? :
Use the space provided in your SUMMER READING PASSPORT or use your own journal, poster board, or other surface.
Then start collecting!
As you collect materials, you can start taping or gluing them down to the page. Don’t be afraid to layer, draw or write or paint over things, to hang things off the page or pop off the page three-dimensionally. There are no rules – the only limit is your own creative potential!
Ideas for materials: tickets from movies or concerts or plays or travelling or sports games, magazine cut-outs or advertisements, drawings, poems, photos, receipts, notes from friends, stickers, clothing tags, clean food wrappers, ribbons, scraps of fabric, & more!
